Andohabe and Ankidihidy Lakes Fish Stocking Initiative
The Andohabe and Ankidihidy Lakes, situated within the Sambava District of the SAVA Region, represent two notable water bodies that have been identified as potential sites for fish stocking initiatives. These lakes are of great importance to the local ecosystem and the livelihoods of the surrounding communities.
Fish Stocking Initiative
On 23 November 2024, 10,000 tilapia fish were introduced into Andohabe and Ankidihidy Lakes in Sambava District, SAVA Region. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the DRPEB SAVA team, the PROFIS company, the Fishermen’s Association, and representatives of local authorities, was designed with the objective of enhancing fish stocks in the region.
Benefits of Tilapia Introduction
The introduction of tilapia fish into these lakes is anticipated to yield a number of benefits, including:
–Increased Fish Production: Tilapia are a fast-growing and prolific species, and their introduction into the lakes is anticipated to result in a notable increase in fish production. This will prove advantageous to local fishermen, who will be able to draw upon a more substantial and sustainable source of fish.
– Improved Food Security: Fish represents a significant source of protein for local communities, and the enhanced production of tilapia will contribute to the improvement of food security in the region.
– Enhanced Livelihoods: The enhanced accessibility of fish will also facilitate the emergence of new business opportunities, particularly in the domains of fish processing and marketing. This will facilitate the creation of employment opportunities and enhance the quality of life in the region.
Role of PROFIS Company
It is also worthy of note that the fish stocks were provided by the PROFIS company. PROFIS is a prominent supplier of fish and fish products in Madagascar. Their involvement in this project serves as an exemplar of their dedication to sustainable fish farming practices.
In conclusion, the fish stocking initiative in Andohabe and Ankidihidy Lakes represents a significant step towards enhancing fish stocks, improving food security, and boosting livelihoods in the SAVA region. The joint endeavour between the DRPEB SAVA team, the PROFIS company, the Fishermen’s Association and local authorities serves to illustrate the value of collective action in the pursuit of sustainable development goals.
